A recent perusal of my aged editions of Sonic the Comic has aroused a significant region of dispute and contention upon the arrangement of the STC universe.
As we are all aware, Doctor Robotnik fuels his brutal and oppressive badnik legions by harvesting hapless Mobians and incarcerating them within badnik shells as organic batteries. We have also been awarded the spectacle of witnessing Sonic and his associates demolishing these badniks upon a multiplicity of occasions, with the imprisoned Mobian concealed within it being ejected from its disintegrating wreckage (curiously without suffering barely mild irritation from his ordeal). In this factor, STC replicates the "SegaSonic" manifestation of the construction of Robotnik's minions, diverging considerably from Archie's more sinister and macabre method of permanent and irrevocable corruption by a mechanical taint (as improbable as the physics of this concept is - but then I suppose in a realm of sentient animals the focus is not concentrated upon realism... ;D ).
The circumstance cited above certainly applies in earlier editions of Sonic the Comic, but as the series progressed I commenced witnessing an alteration and adaptation of Robotnik's methods of terrorising and mutilating Mobian populaces - namely, that many badniks cease obviously contain Mobian power sources. This intriguing development can be exemplified in many adventures, "Sonic: Robotnik's Revenge" (Issues 37-38) and "Knuckles: Carnival Night Conspiracy" (Issues 39-44) being examples that immediately elevate themselves to prominence within my appreciation.
A simple response to this would be to attest that Robotnik's technological advancements discard the requirement for organic batteries as the efficiency of conventional fuel to motivate his servile creations improves due to access to more substantial research and resources - the notorious and ubiquitous Crimson Trooper bipedal badniks are an exemplification of this proposition.
However, this supposition is discredited by the observation that Robotnik continues to quite regularly punitively abduct numerous Mobians to supplement his badnik manufacturing programme (such as in "Plasma" Issue 78), and the fact that Commander Brutus additionally utilises Mobians for his personal renegade cohort of badniks coupled with the distinct lack of a liberated entity when our celebrated regal-blue hero rends a horrific course through them in "Sonic's World: Revolution", Issues 79-83. The ultimate, direct, and explicit and irrefutable proof of the absolute despicable subversion of Mobians in the badnik manufacturing procedure is "Sonic: The Big Con", Issue 46, where we regale direct demonstrations of Mobians being ravenously devoured by a concealed 'processor' - and yet when the resultant badniks are routinely obliterated, no Mobians are freed as a consequence.
The conclusion I derive from evaluating and rigorously inspecting these observations is something that I believe that the new incarnation of Sonic the Comic could derive some quite interesting material in extrapolating - to view a direct observation of a captured Mobian's corruption within the remit of Doctor Zachary, for instance, would illustrate a callous and calculating menance concealed within his disingenuously frail body. As in the "SatAM" cartoon, it would also apply a more intense aura about the stories to know that genuine lives are being destroyed or threatened.
I now consider the mechanism of badnik creation that Doctor Robotnik employed before he conquered Mobius differed from that of his dictatorial regime. In the former instance, the Doctor's resources were quite limited (this is supported by the knowledge that the Flickies could be freed from badniks when Robotnik was demonstrated to be a rebel once more in "Sonic: Flickies' Island", Issues 104-106) and he was thus compelled to resort to cruder methods to create his faithful cohorts of steel menance - hence the simplistic nature of early badniks and the ability to free their 'organic batteries'. When more substantial resources became available to Robotnik with the formal institution of his despotic rule, he could devote more to the evolution of 'roboticisation' technology, resulting in the irrevocable perversion of Mobians in a fashion akin to the Archie manifestation of the craft. His original technique was then only reserved for emergency battlefield replenishment of depleted forces, where the extensive time and energy requirements of the more complete method were not available or convenient (hence in "Sonic's World: Revolution", Amy Rose and Johnny Lightfoot were released from their badnik shells). The Cyberniks can be explained away by the suggestion that unsuppressed biological sentience would be required for their effective operation and the prohibitive expense of constructing an entire complex interior of Megatel.
What do you believe? Could this be viable?
