Or the Hulk. Or Jekyll and Hyde. It's not exactly the most original concept on Earth, and it certainly wasn't invented in Superman...

I didn't say it was invented by Superman. I'm saying the specifics of "A red Chaos Emerald did it" point to Superman. Anyway, back to Archie shenanigans.

I just love the innuendo of the phrase "entry hatch" in that scene!

I much prefer STC Super as a character, with his spikier adapted design and swaggering bearing that has more pride and panache than the Archie Super with his ponderously portentuous prattle. In all fairness, though, the Archie version actually seems to be much closer to the STC vision than the actual STC Super ever was!
STC Super's sole ambition was annihilation, and yet despite multiple appearances he seemed strangely impotent and unable to achieve even a shadow of it. His tally includes a mansion, a biplane, the roof of a seedy bar, a few troopers, an Aquis badnik... and, erm, that's more or less it. In the scan on the previous page, Archie Super was inflicting actual mass destruction and spreading genuine terror and trauma...!

And yet, the burden to bear if SS were to actually kill would be too great for Sonic to continue his heroics, or any sort of a public life - as we saw in Running Wild Part 3.

There is also the small factor of him easily defeating the God of Destruction

What I always found odd was, Super completely destroyed Sidewinders mansion yet kept a "shield" around those inside. Why didn't he just blow them all up if he was that way inclined? Silly Super!

He said it himself; he wanted to destroy each of them personally. Super's got a very sadistic sense of humour; this was one of those instances where he was deliberately holding back, just to prolong the pleasure of killing people.

Regarding the Tekno guest appearance, there was no hate mail. A few people had a go at the comic on a message board for using the characters without the proper consent of the guy who created (and owns) those characters - a fair complaint to make. After the images circulated I heard that Lew Stringer was furious about it. Richard Elson told me that he would not have been happy if they'd used any of his. (Nigel Kitching, in his usual defeatest attitude, didn't care either way.) Tom, my dear boy... Why should I be offended by somebody working for Archie including a couple of my characters in his script? I would be offended if: 1. It was intended to mock 2. It was some other form of attack 3. If the writer and artist made money from my creations - as far as I am aware they were not paid a higher page rate for referencing my genius... Also, it's kind of worth remembering that this is so mind-numbingly trivial and unimportant that it's hard to work up any particular emotional response to it. If I try really hard to examine my feelings what I find is that I'm vaguely flattered. If I had a copy of the comic in question I'd stick it with my set of STCs. Defeatist? Not I sir. Nigel

Hey Nigel!
I actually enjoyed the homage in Archie. It was a nice little reference and shows the creative team are aware of things outside of their own Sonicverse.

I suppose it's a matter of perspective. I do think it's somewhat defeatist to be so passive about a company claiming the rights to your creations, without compensating you, when you had never agreed to sign them over. From your perspective, perhaps you see it as your infiltration into popular culture. Fair enough.

Is that true about Lew Stringer being furious? To be honest, I liked the nods towards STC as well, but I wasn't the creator of the characters so it shouldn't affect me in the slightest. Hey Nigel!

From your perspective, perhaps you see it as your infiltration into popular culture. Fair enough. They claimed the rights? When? Where? Damn their eyes... But seriously - nobody profited from this use - that's the issue. It was just a bit of fun. Fleetway, on the other hand, did profit from using my strips in reprint and this was not something I was consulted about. Not only was I not paid I also was denied new commissions. That I was uncomfortable with. But the Archie guy was just doing it for fun. I like fun. Nigel

But the Archie guy was just doing it for fun. I like fun. Being responsible for roughly 60% of the most immature and inane crap in the Butchery thread, and pretty much 100% of the ones poking the stick of silliness at your (awesome) art style, and all the ones portraying Megadroid as a horrible person, I am very, very, very relieved to see you say that

Yeah, but all that's forgiveable because your butcheries are genuinally really [censored]ing funny.

Glad to hear I'm not alone in thinking the Tekno cameo wasn't that big a deal. To me, it just came across as a nod to STC's accomplishments, not something that was intended in malice.
So long as it's a one-off and such characters are never featured in a prominent role, I'd say it's fair play to be honest

Yeah, but all that's forgiveable because your butcheries are genuinally really [censored]ing funny. Considering that the first ones I ever made got me in a spot of bother and facing accusations of racism, I'm dubious. I'm a bit concerned now, because given that apparently Lew Stringer was really annoyed about STC characters appearing in Archie, he's going to be furious if he ever sees what I've done to Raining Bananas.
