Its more likely than you think...Sadly. Oh well. I suppose the good thing is that they aren't console exclusive. So I won't need to by two versions with different characters. So yeah. NIGHTMARE > VADER.

Heh, I was just about to post this. Sadly, I don't really care about Star Wars, so this washes over me somewhat, but the sheer epicness is not lost on me. Does this mean Namco are gonna start whoring out Soul Calibur?

You know, I was a bit "WTF" to begin with. But thinking about it, it doesn't really make any less sense than Link/Spawn in SCII or a Spartan in Dead or Alive so, whatever. So long as they're fun to play as (and it's Darth Vader and Yoda in a very, very good sword/melee based fighting game - so I think we've secured a winner there), it's alright by me.
Although I think we could be onto a worrying precedent where thanks to SC and SSBB, people become under the impression that it's required to have big random cross-overs of franchises and companies for fighting games to make them interesting any more...

Although I think we could be onto a worrying precedent where thanks to SC and SSBB, people become under the impression that it's required to have big random cross-overs of franchises and companies for fighting games to make them interesting any more... A brief history of fighting game crossovers, which isn't historical at all because I can't be arsed with a timeline. Art of Fighting had Ryo Sakazaki in it as a secret boss. Fatal Fury 2 had Geese Howard in it as the final boss, slotting him into the storyline. The King of Fighters is a mishmash of Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, some original content and a bunch of other SNK crap. SNK Vs. Capcom Street Fighter Alpha series has Guy, Sodom, Rolento, Guy and Maki from Final Fight Rival Schools had Sakura Kasugano in it. Capcom Vs. SNK Namco X Capcom. Super Smash Bros. is a big crossover of Nintendo franchises, as is Super Smash Bros. Melee. Little Mac appears in the GameCube version of Fight Night: Round 2. Super Smash Bros. Brawl has Snake and Sonic enter the fray. The original Dead or Alive threw in Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden. For DOA4 they crossed with Halo for SPARTAN-458, Nicole. Ayane then showed up in Ninja Gaiden. Fighters Megamix had the then-entire cast of Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers having a big scrap, with some other SEGA faces tossed in for good measure. Soul Calibur had Yoshimitsu. Soul Calibur 2 had Link or Spawn or Heihachi. Soul Calibur Legends has Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia. Soul Calibur 4 has, if this isn't a joke like Ganondorf and Wind Waker Link in SC2, Yoda and Darth Vader. Ehrgeiz starred Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth, Vincent, Yuffie and Zack from Final Fantasy VII. Battletoads & Double Dragon.

Yeah, but now we're talking about them being "headline" things. That only really started with Soul Calibur 2 and seems to be progressing further and further.
Not that it hasn't been done before, but now it seems to be that they're feeling they need to sell the games on these facts and they wont sell otherwise (I guess Link's appearence in the Cube version of SCII tipping the sales scales very heavily in Nintendo's direction probably played a part in creating this).
Not to say they shouldn't be going for big things like this and making a big deal out of it - but it is beginning to become a bit of a worrying standard that the games are relying on headline crossovers to sell (or at least they're thinking they do) rather than the actual game.
Still, playing as Yoda and Darth Vader makes it all better really. 'Cos they're Yoda and Darth Vader.

Yeah. When Ryo Sakazaki was seen in Fatal Fury Special, (and [censored] knows HOW since you had to beat the entire game, including SIX SNK BOSSES, without losing a round) the arcade crowd went nuts with glee, but it was secret as opposed to a selling point.

Ahh well, can't complain too much. I bet ya that the alt Star Wars character will become available to download for a price a while after the games initial release.

Well, that's just not cricket. And I bet that Darth Vader is already on the disc and you just have to buy the key to unlock him.
Why with the console exclusive characters Namco? They weren't popular last time. Why would I want to play as a toad in Soul Calibur IV? Why would I want to play as 7 foot asthmatic space nazi and pay for a PS3 Namco?
LE SIGH.

1up claims their press release (the original source of the story) as the source. It's in the link at the top of the page Also, Yoda would be way more fun to play as, and a totally new playstyle, but... Vader's so cool! Here's to hoping for DLC to break the exclusivity.

As a Star Wars fan, and the Soul Calibur series being my favourite fighting games ever, I think this is pretty damn cool. Granted, it doesn't make a whole load of sense (you just KNOW they're going to come up with some lame background info about how Yoda and Vader somehow managed to leave their galaxy into ours, and a motivation for going around around fighting people (bet ya it'll have something to do with Soul Edge)), but what does it really matter? It's not a proper cross-over to begin with -- It's just bonus appearances of characters from another franchise that'd be counted as non-canon to Soul Calibur's storyline (*ahem* strictly speaking), just as with II. Speaking of which, I thought Link's appearance in II made more sense then the other two. I mean, both Zelda and Soul Calibur are medieval fantasies, only Soul Calibur is based in real-life locations. But it's conceivable to think Hyrule could exist in the same universe as it's isolated and cut-off from the rest of the world due it being surrounded by giant mountains. Furthermore, Vader exclusive to PS3? BUM. There's nothing wrong with Yoda of course, it's just that Vader rocks harder - I don't think there'd be anything better then thrashing Yunsung with Imperial March playing in the background (provided if he's in it, of course). Hm. I do plan on getting a PS3 one day though (c'mon, Little Big Planet, people), so I don't know why the hell I'm complaining. I suppose it's just because I'm more fond of using the 360 controller.

It's only recently that I see that Vader looks like he's wearing a quilt, which makes him far less intimidating.
Yoda could be interesting, since there isn't another character that short in the francise. Darth Maul, if included, I could see being a Seong Mina clone.

Yoda will probably play like Talim on crack - lots of jumpy and spinny. And Darth Vader doesn't wear a Kilt, he wears the Roman armour piece that covers your privates. Never see Gladiator?

In either case, I think I'd prefer to play as Yoda circa. Episode II/III, with all the yelling, and hopping and the force powers, mway[/Professor Frink].

That is my main complaint with Vader on this game. Some parts of his body looks like it has been lightened slight from jet black to an ash grey. So stuff like the square patterns on his sleeves become a bit more pronounced and does take a bit of getting used to.
Generally though, I think both he and Yoda look pretty good.
