Or they just don't like the gameplay, possibly? While I find Halo to be a solid game, it's just never appealed to me as much as, say, Metroid (although I compare the two purely on the basis of them being futuristic shooters). Well I love Metroid as well, the most recent Prime was excellant but they're almost different genres. Yeah man. Besides Pinball (and according to all the pedantic morons critics, Metroid 2 (I love that game (a double triple bracket, is that legal?))), the Metroid series has been consistently awesome. The two series, however, are different completely different (hence the note I added at the end of my last post). It's quite fun to go onto YouTube and find a massive fan war between the Metroid fanboys and the Halo fanboys ("omgzlol u r so rtrded, masret chef wud kik samoos ass").

Prostroke Golf(PC), The Movies(PC), Black and White 2(PC), an education game(PC), and a couple of secret things for the Wii and DS.
To stay on topic for this page, I'm liking those concept arts. There seems to be a lot of bloom type effects in those screens though, not too fond of it.

You helped make The Movies? That's totally awesome, I was really addicted to that game for a while.

Never saw why there were people who hated Halo. Though it seems to me they are either: a) MW fans. MW and Halo fans just naturally hate each other. b) Haven't played the games and are just riding a wave. c) Dislike the idea that a shooter, of all things, could become one of the leading industry figures. d) Are actually disgusted with the fanatical side of the fan base but blame it on the game. Is the possibility of someone legitimately not liking the series so goddamn mind-boggling?

Is the possibility of someone legitimately not liking the series so goddamn mind-boggling? Mm, I do agree with you. Although I can't see the reasoning for the "hate-train", at the same time there is a slight growing group of "Oh, I bet you're one of those people who hate Halo too" types. Not saying we've got one here or nuthin, just making a little observation.

Although I can't see the reasoning for the "hate-train", I'd have thought it was pretty straight-forward: people who don't find the series all that great are annoyed when it gets perfect scores and insane praise like "Game of the Century".

None of that actually means anything, so it seems silly to get one's knickers in a twist about it. It's just the opinions of another person.

Precisely. Modern Warfare 2 gets praise like that all the time and is thus attracting a similar opinion from many people about it.

None of that actually means anything, so it seems silly to get one's knickers in a twist about it. It's just the opinions of another person. True enough. But being confident in your stance that something is crap isn't going to make the official sources and droves of people give it the response you feel it deserves, so it's sort of rendered moot. It'll still get too much undeserving adoration. I'm not even sure why I'm explaining it like this, since I've said a few times I don't find Halo a bad series. Although I don't gush about it, either. Funnily enough I started ODST yesterday.

None of that actually means anything It does. It further raises the profile of the series, tricking people into holding it in esteem and setting it as the standard. Thus, we get bizarre lazy journalistic shorthand like " Blasty McHeadshot is the new Halo". Thus, developers use Halo as the standard, which means every new game becomes Halo. It's possible that some or all of this post is an unreasonable exaggeration.

Okay so who else is going to be on the Beta? Apparently it won't be available until late morning Pacific time, so that's pretty much late evening here (ish?).
Important question. Anyone know if it allows guests?

Reach is looking absurdly good. Jetpacks are amazing. Sprinting is definitely fun for surprise-beat downs. Active-camo and the guardian armor-lock thing I thought were a bit meh though. Also, of the two levels currently available, only one actually feels much good. The other is a bland set of corridors. Not many of the new game types are available yet either. What's available is definitely fun though, considering it's mainly existing Halo matches, only now with jetpacks. Actually, one of the new-ish modes, Stockpile (A CTF variant) is well suited to jetpack shenanigans. Basically it's a cross between CTF and territory grab. Various flags spawn across the map, each team has to grab as many as possible and take them back to their base camp, where after a set timer, each team gets points depending on however many flags are at the base. But, since the timer starts at 60 seconds, there's always plenty of time to jetpack your team in, steal as many flags as they have, and hike them all the way back to your side. It's not always the best tactic, but damn was it the most fulfilling. (As fulfilling as halo ever can be anyways) Also minor niggle, the default controls are nothing like Halo 3's. Could have been a similar layout to 2, but I never played it much so can't recall. If you want to stick to a Halo3-esque control scheme, I reccomend switching to Recon. The 'Switch-grenades' and 'activate-ability' buttons are switched, but tbh after a little bit of play you'll realise why. Go play.

Just checked it out. For a little while at the beginning I had an odd sense of alienation, like I wasn't playing a Halo game anymore. Not to do with the loadouts or assassinations, more the weapons. Halo's weapons are somewhat iconic in their design, from the instantly recognisable assault rifle to the curved plasma pistol. The new versions of these weapons are often drastically different, the same in sillouette only.
This threw me. However, after a few games, they still function as you expect them to, they still do the same things and have the same old tricks. What is nice is how they all have the design markings of the first games weapons only in a future prototype upgrade stance. This makes perfect sense to the background, considering Reach was the Spartans big armoury and research centre. It's a nice point of keeping it true to the source material.
The new weapons I'm not quite warmed to. The pistol (so touted as being the grand return of the Halo 1 pistol) doesn't feel quite all that. Similarly the two new Covenant weapons for the power variety, the Focus Rifle and the Plasma....thingy...are both sweet to get a kill with but just don't quite have the same design feel that things like the Fuel Rod or Beam Rifle did. Maybe it's cos we've spent the best part of a decade with those weapons and only now something different appears. Maybe I'll warm to them. Who knows. I'll offer some more feedback once I've tried out a few more games on this.
Armour abilities are simply genius. Minor and major at the same time, they either just get you killed or let you perform brilliantly fun moves to confound and ambush your opponent. The majority seem geared to how you move be it faster, flying or evading. The evade one is my favourite. It's simple, VERY effective and has a ton of uses the others might always have a problem with.
Of the two maps I played, Powerhouse is rather fun is a little too open all the time. You literally cannot go anywhere without being shot at in some way. Even more worrying is some areas for Red Team respawn place you directly in view of a sniper nest. That's gonna be in the Beta Report for sure.
Swordbase meanwhile is an interesting beast. TONS of cover and loads of floors to explore. Jetpacking between the platforms seems to be the predominant strategy, but leaves them very open to a cloaked sniper waiting patiently. It seems that the maps may be designed to emphasise certain armour abilities, Powerhouse certainly killed off anyone who even dared use a jetpack while Swordbase rewards them. I am intrigued to see what else goes on in this style.
Got a chance to play as an Elite (hence the using Evasion, an Elite only ability) and I found them more fun to use than the Spartans, not for the reason of the extra power, but rather simply down to their regenerating health. Many times as a Spartan I felt I had too much downtime hunting madly for health packs instead of getting to the fight. It feels a little archaic in a game series which practically invented the idea of regenerating health to keep the intensity up. I am aware this is near identical to Halo 1 in style, but it didn't particularly work in that ones multiplayer either, hence Halo 2's rise to fame as multiplayer king of the original Xbox. But hey, Reach may have the best of both worlds in that sense. If I want the new style, I can always just vote for Elite gametypes and get more of them. It'll keep it varied at least.
Final few notes
- I'm loving the DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle) - I'm loving the Needle Rifle - Assassinations are pretty hard to get now, so the fancy kill is very satisfiying. - Marty's new music score is as amazing as ever - Graphics/Art Design are quite simply jaw dropping in places
This is shaping up well. However I must encourage you have a friend when you play it. Not only to take proper advantage of the soon to appear Buddy System but because neither Spartans or Elites speak, leading to a curiously silent battle should you have no team mates to talk to. (Naturally, we do not talk to the public, thats a mistake if there ever was one for a Halo game)

Eh, I find it far too slow and cumbersome compared to just shooting them in the head.
I have a feeling it'll show it's power in levels with vehicles though. Small crowded slayer matches clearly are not it's environment.

It doesn't need a full charge to work. Even one grenade is enough to steal an easy kill. At one point I went unbeaten for 12 kills with that thing. So awesome Especially when you drop a bucket load into a crowd.
