Well... that was odd...
Sorry but fan characters have more of a point than just for personal use, some people roleplay with them, and honestly, I would much rather see someone roleplay as their fan character than an official character because doing it with an official character tells me that person has no creativity or imagination of their own.
I have a few Sonic fan characters I use for this.
But you do have a point, everyone's more interested in their own ideas than others, I don't mind seeing what my friends' fan characters look like in art, especially when I'd like to know for any RP we're doing, but I wouldn't want to play as them in a game.
In fact, I think fanwork should stay out of official games, because of it we have bad characters in Sonic like Marina, Silver and Chip.
Fanfiction can be interesting depending on what it revolves around, personally I don't care much about a story where someone's character is the main focus but if they're added to a story to substitute the plot nicely than I don't mind, as long as the story interests me.
And yes, I do have a few characters that aren't fan characters any more, some of them have two versions, fan and original, but I will say that all my characters started as fan ideas from Sonic.
I even have an STC fan character I might use in a fanfic I might eventually write (I don't like to write without a plan, and this is still in planning...) but I do understand where people have a problem with glory-stealing characters... I understand the appeal in 'looking cool' but it's so overdone it's not even interesting looking anymore, especially in sprite comics.
Sprite comics are actually where part of the problems come from with fan characters, most of them are just recolors and edits. I can't tell you how many foxes I've seen that are Tails sprites with one tail hacked off (if that) and demon eyes added on, I'm not saying I've never merely recolored a Tails sprite and lobbed off a tail, because I have, several times, for three different characters, but I have seen people do this for years and never go beyond that realm. For me, it was something of a phase I went through because my drawing skills weren't as good, but now I can draw well enough to put my own ideas out there. But some rely on it, I don't mind the fan characters, I mind the poor medium they are used to display in... I wish people would be more creative...

If their in a game, their not "fan characters" even if a fan drew them... Erm anyone remember our old red echidna friend... "Knuckles"... Drawn by a kid at school and if SEGA hadn't been clear of mind that day Knuckles would have ended up with a sunset perm. So despite what some say, Marine, Silver and [censored]... I mean Chip... Aren't fan characters at all and are offical. Still some points are made about roleplaying, but then again, I hate roleplaying because 9/10 of the time their kinda... Crap. But no one should even attempt to use offical characters without first thinking about it. Most of the time, using offical characters results in them NOT being themselves (fanfiction.com, you know your writers have sinned for years). But having been around the net so damn long that its no longer funny anymore... To me fan mades are as much of a curse as bad storypoints in offical games. Sprites are easier to edit then offical artwork... I think just about every game has been edited by now and had their sprites altered. Then again, sometimes you smile at edits... Using tails to make Raye the squirrel for instance, which I saw someone do years ago, was an execellant approach to sprite editing with amazing results. Edit: projectzuel erm... My real name is "Emily"... And my surname begins with the letter "B"... Emily... Bee... This just get it in the open, I suck at names! Its actually the name I used on Ken Penders forums when he had a site up (and when I posted back in 2001/2002). Note: I was a complete fan idiot in those days, this name is a curse to me from those days and I was still using it when I first signed up here at the end of my days as a Sonic fan at that point back in 2005. I continued using it simply because, this is the name I use for the Sonic community so despite the curse of my hyperactive fan noob days, its not related to Charmy Bee (you're not the first to think it was, I forgot how many times I explained this). This is off topic though, so ignore this bit. ;-)

Still some points are made about roleplaying, but then again, I hate roleplaying because 9/10 of the time their kinda... Crap. You aren't really supposed to read other people's roleplay, you're supposed to (if you want) join it, it's fun for the moment, but when it's done, people should delete the threads. I never said people should be making epic novels out of it... But no one should even attempt to use offical characters without first thinking about it. Most of the time, using offical characters results in them NOT being themselves (fanfiction.com, you know your writers have sinned for years). There's good fanfiction and there's bad fanfiction, it's like anything else. Sadly, the good stuff is buried by the bad stuff... So it's all grouped together. But having been around the net so damn long that its no longer funny anymore... To me fan mades are as much of a curse as bad storypoints in offical games. Some fan mades. I think I know which sprite you mean. I've seen people make Blaze from Sonic, Silver from Shadow and different chao sprites from the common blue, it's pretty cool.

I happen to be the exception to this post.
I hardly have any fancharacters. I do have many characters, on a style similar to Sonic, but they have their own story, their own style, and overall don't relate to Sonic in the slightest. In fact I've been perfecting the designs to reflect more old cartoons than Sonic.
Instead, I love to draw good other people's fancharacters and redesign bad other people's fancharacters. Dunno why, I like it.

where? in the meanders of hell?!? XD Oh, com'on Chip isn't bad! I can understand Silver and Marine too BUT NOT CHIP! he was funny! not all characters have to be kick ass super strong or fast or super dumb (big) or super intriguing as Shadow or needs to fly! Some characters have to be normal......well, enough normal..... I used to have Fan characters too, one was some sort of lamp Genie......but then sonic and the seacret rings came out and it sort of Drawnded............ sad day when I discovered Shahara

Normally I prefer to hold most Sonic characters in the official sense with a kind of "perhaps if I ignore them enough they'll just go away" attitude.
Chip however I utterly cannot abide in the slightest. His every word is a pain on my ear. Abhorrant voice acting. Even by Sonic game standards.

Some characters have to be normal......well, enough normal..... I used to have Fan characters too, one was some sort of lamp Genie......but then sonic and the seacret rings came out and it sort of Drawnded............ sad day when I discovered Shahara I never said every character needed a power, I said every character needs to be different, I don't care if Chip is as pointless as Chris, what I hate about him is he's essentially Tails, with one tail that's one tone, wings, a gay story that doesn't belong in Sonic, deeper voice and different fur. In other words, he's a 'replacement' for Tails in that game, and that's why I hate Chip. His intended purpose was to give Sonic a 'buddy' like the old days, but I don't see why they couldn't just use Tails, and not Chip, oh wait, yes I do. Because of all these characters in Sonic now, the old ones are losing their sheen and being pushed farther onto the sidelines with half their personalities ripped out and given new ones that make them look less like sidekicks and main characters and more like something you see in the background. Fan characters aren't a problem with me at all, I have mine, I have characters that evolved from fan characters and I have characters that evolved into fan characters. They become a problem when made official, it's all fine and good for a starting game without character ideas, I know that Tails and Knuckles, and even Amy were fan ideas at first, when Sonic was young, and just getting started, but SEGA can't pull this [censored] forever, they don't know when to draw the line and say "This is enough." I'm pretty sure the purpose of adding fan ideas to something is to build a base of characters that give a game it's balance and variety, but that's a moot point with the series' growing age, and now look what they're coming up with. They're essentially overlapping characters, as I said before. tl;dr: There's a time to add to a project and a time to stop and arrange what you have. Adding building blocks to an already top-heavy tower doesn't solve the problem, the tower just has more weight on it and will collapse, it's the same with Sonic now.

I just hated Chip because it took until the final rounds of the game to make himself look awesome at all. And that no matter how much I tried to like the ending, his message to Sonic is as unemotional sounding as they come. I hate voice actors who sound so flat... sonic has always been plagued with some of the worst. Its not so bad with some like Big, his voice is his character, but others like Chip and Silver, could have been so much better.

I think all the voices sound terrible now, Sonic's was better in Unleashed, but not by much IMO. I think SEGA just needs to find better English voice actors. I've played SA1 and 2 in Japanese, and I did actually like some of the voice acting better in Japanese, some of it needed... improvement. Maybe when that technology they used to create AVATAR comes out, in the next five years, we won't need to worry about bad voice actors anymore? ;D

4Kids voice actors are still being used. Dan Green though, is an exceptionally good Voice actor, and Professor Pickles is proof the guy doesn't just do Yugioh voices all the time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Green_(voice_actor)To be fair, he did the best with Mephiles anyone could. But the last episode of Sonic x, it noticed that Jason Griffith isn't so hot at voices. When doing Shadow he slipped into Sonic mode for a few seconds and threw everything out, something Dan can hold together without doing that. The worst voice actor I've ever heard from 4Kids origins is Vivi from One Piece, so for me, its quite a comparison to make with Sonic and her. www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-H0zYdA_fkFlatest voice in the show.

If this was a topic on voice acting I'd bring Thunder Prince into the mix as the "worst" voice acting I've ever heard. Though I can't even find a Youtube vid on it with the english dub voices. Miss Monday was awesome - period.

kids sucks for voices entirely, and I liked the older One Piece actors much better than the new ones, the new voice acting drove me to stop watching, and I was such a huge fan of the show... The newer Pokemon voices are just as annoying. >.> Mephiles voice was actually really good, I thought, and Knuckles isn't the most annoying character on the show. For me, that's Tails, Creem, Cheese and Amy. High-pitched voices just have an effect on me that makes me want to borrow a hardcore shooter and start blasting faces off. (I don't even like shooters ) Sadly, this is the effect of ALL high-pitched voices like Cream, not just bad voice acting, I can't stand kids, boys, sometimes, but not girls, so part of my opinion about those is that they just need less annoying voices. Anyway I guess I should say something on-topic. Most of the characters I've drawn have been sonic-style, because they looked like Sonic characters, because that was all I could draw at first (seems to be where everybody starts), I just grouped them all into being fan characters, whether they fit or not, when I gained somewhat better drawing abilities, I separated the odd ones, which it turns out were a lot, from the ones that fit, sorting took time since I liked some of them in Sonic, but they didn't go in Sonic purely because they were more like if Sonic characters had Pokemon powers. (that's why I like Blaze actually, because she reminds me of my creation of elemental and magical Sonic characters back before most of the mary-sue official crap existed.) Now that I think of it, I wonder if me and my generation are at fault for creating all those ideas. I knew some other kids that were my age back then that did the same. It must have been popular enough SEGA decided to make it a reality. I wish the whole element powers thing would be taken better taken, but ahh well...

I liked the older voice acting of One Piece, I didn't know who did the dub for it, I just know that around the time before it stopped airing their voice acting plummeted to a degree even I couldn't stand, and I've sat through some BAD voice acting. (Sonic The Movie, anyone?)

But alas, a topic title prevents me telling you a lot of things I have to say. Surprisingly, for One Piece unlike Sonic, there isn't a lot of fan characters overall around. The format for Sonic is a lot more easy access then most other shows and franchise around.

The format for Sonic is a lot more easy access then most other shows and franchise around. Now I'm interested to know what you would say. I love learning about this stuff. I don't really understand why it's Sonic that's easy access. There's easier, like Mario without a continuity to go on or Zelda with a questionable continuity at best. If anything I think Sonic's kind of scary to make fan characters in. I'm always careful about how I create a fan character because of all the soft spots, but maybe it's got to do more with the style, it's easy to draw Sonic characters and there's so many different kinds. I'm not trying to insult other users by saying this, but maybe it's just because Sonic appeals to furries, who do tend on making the most characters, and that's not an insult, since that's how I got into being a fur in the first place, through Sonic and because that was the style I could draw. (Also notice how many bad artists exist in the fandom and how we have more sprite sites than the official Sonic canons have characters.

It's more about how easy they are to draw primarily. Sonic characters generally tend to follow a set pattern of stylistic choices. With a few exceptions, most characters have similar build and body, with same sized heads on same sized bodies, with similar looking faces. That's much easier to design, and more variable than some kind of human in a plumbers suit.
Not only that, but while Mario has no continuity and no sense of overarching narrative, but since every plot always uses the same characters, in more or less the same situations, with only the locations that are slightly different; it makes it far harder to insert a new character. Compare this to Sonic, where there's a new character almost every game, and a load of animals running around like it's perfectly normal, not to mention a world with continuity (somewhere) that welcomes new characters to fill roles they try to create to justify the other new characters, and there's always some opening somebody can put there fan character into, be it leader of a rival echidna clan, another prototype ultimate life form, Sonic's brother, Tails' brother, Sonic's children, another sealed evil in a can, the leader of a foreign country, an organised crime syndicate from the special zone, a sinister broadcast head, police officers, evil gods, evil baddies pretending to be egyptian gods, or even main characters identical twin sibling...
All of which leave more than ample spots for fancharacters, moreso than a continuity-less, series.
