With Phoenix Nights, you did specify a decade, so...
I have trouble with all this because what you want isn't something that actually exists. None of the "classics" adhered to any kind of format, really. The common factor is that they have jokes and a laugh track.
Red Dwarf isn't very traditional. Never was.

Watched it t'other night.
S'allright, I guess. Predictable jokes (although I was kinda expecting there to be a moose crashing into the Trojan at the last minute...) and horrendous use of canned laughter, but I'm sure if I go back to watch the first season (which I thought was great at the time...) it would have been the same.
Better than that awful Back to Earth or whatever it was called...

I didn't think it was canned either. Are you referring to series one or have you actually watched X, Stu?

It wasn't canned, actually. The Dave series? Really? Sounded rather like it... ahh, come to think of it, the video I was watching on Dave's on demand whatsit had really poor quality anyway... *shrug*

have you actually watched X, Stu? Nah. I read criticism elsewhere that said it was audience laughter, but poorly edited so it sounds canned.

Watched a bit of this last night. Quite liked it. Surprisingly.

Last night's was fab, loads of great character-based jokes and a good "threat" plot vehicle in the form of Pree.
Next week's stands to be a bit of a weird one...

Saw this last night. Dirty Mackem Jesus. =P Also, think they missed a trick when Kryten was discussing one of his various operations on Lister. Would've been subtly funnier if it had been his appendix removed rather than his spleen. Explanation: Series 2 revealed via the memories he gave Rimmer he had his appendix removed in earlier years. Series 6, Legion removes a second appendix from him, likely a mistake by writers who'd forgotten he'd lost it already and regarded as the most notable mistake in writing they've made. Could've been a cheeky nod to have had Lister lose three appendixes this time round, but never mind.

To be fair, they gave a pretty big nod to the 'lost' Cat episode that only nerds (read: me) who watched all the special features on the DVDs would even know about. That's pretty hardcore in-joke territory there already.

Ah! That is true. Never crossed my mind at the time, admittedly.
Come to think of it, there's nothing stopping them bringing that episode to life now if they wanted to, seeing as the necessary cast are in place. Might need one or two rewrites to change anything outdated that may be there, though I can't remember any examples offhand.

Lemons is my favourite so far, I think, lots of good jokes. Bit concerned at how many gags that run through an episode seem distinctly un-Dwarf, however (Chinese Whispers last week, Shakespeare expressions this week). It's the sort of stuff that could happen in any sitcom in the world- we're only one sofa away from Grant/Naylor's US remake nightmare.
That said, the sci-fi elements of the show remain excellent and the twist at the end was a great bait & switch- the audience had fallen for the trap just as much as the Dwarfers.

The whole "which cartoon character would you [censored]" thing from... what... S2? 3? They've always done this sort of thing, or at least they did in the earlier, more interesting episodes. You saying that actually makes me think they might be doing it right! I'm going to watch the first one now.

I wouldn't mind it if it wasn't so shoehorned in there. The Wilma Flintstone conversation came from natural character interactions and with the context of their extreme loneliness and isolation. The Chinese Whispers gag was presented as an entire B-plot and the Shakespeare thing is exactly the kind of thing that could have been removed for pacing issues in an earlier series. It was funny, sure, I'm just not sure it was Dwarf. I am very picky, though.
Though, admittedly, Lister's dialogue was [censored]ing terrible in that scene. He must have said "expression" five times in one sentence and it didn't really get a laugh so it seemed very weird.
I'm not sure, so far, where I'd rank this series next to its predeccesors. It's better than 1, 2, a fair bit of 7, much of 8 and all of BTE, but a lot of 3-6 is superior so far. Your thoughts, dear readers?

Changed my mind about watching, remembered Red Dwarf's crap and its fans are mental. Watched something good instead.

All tastes and opinions are subjective. One man's lemon curd is another's lemon turd. Supes: He doesn't like Red Dwarf. That's fine. Stu: You don't like Red Dwarf. That's fine. And I suppose I am a bit crackers from time to time.

Amazon review of Red Dwarf X:
"Why oh why did they ever cancel Red Dwarf? The new series on the DAVE channel has smashed through the grey, politically-correct writers from the Ministry of UNFUN at the BBC and reminds us all what real comedy is about. I didn't know how much of my soul had died till the new series was produced and now it's back I want MORE."
Psychotic.

the thing i'm taking away from this thread is that british people live in fear of "tv vans" and also still use televisions for things other than video games and movies and dvd sets of tv shows and internet-based streaming media
