No, just not renewed. The BBC decided to pursue other avenues for comedy, even though almost every comedy series they've made since then has been horrendous.
But at least they're not as [censored] as ITV's attempts at comedy.

But at least they're not as [censored] as ITV's attempts at comedy. not really at all let's really and be objective here since 1999 BBC comedy has included - Dead ringers (radio and tv) - That mitchell and webb sound - That Mitchell and webb look - The unbelievable truth - The thick of it - Not going out (not great not bad) - My Hero (well I liked it as a kid no idea if it would stand up to a re watch) - The Mighty Boosh -Dinnerladies -coupling - bleak old shop of stuff -Charlie brooker's screenwipe -Charlie brooker's newswipe -QI - The office - Extras - would I lie to you - the bubble not to mention a host of ongoing shows that were still airing at the time. I hate to pick up on this but everyone seems to be claiming British comedy died after Red Dwarf... and if we expand past the BBC there is a host more post 1999 comedy that was great. - Black Books - Spaced - The Ricky Gervais show - Peep Show - 10 o'clock live - shaun of the dead - hot fuzz - in the loop - run fat boy run - paul (arguably british) - creature comforts -you have been watching

My Hero was [censored]ing awful. The very beginning showed a bit of promise, but it was instantly downhill from then onwards.
Also, I'm pretty certain he was specifically referring to sit-coms, or at the very least not counting movies or sketch or panel shows. The latter, especially, having taken over as the defacto 'comedy show' these days.
At any rate, when the movie first fell through and they came back to the BBC looking to do series 9, the new boss of Comedy was someone that actively disliked Red Dwarf (Stu?), so he refused. Not really about wanting to go in a different direction as simply not wanting to go in that one. I don't think the BBC would have done that great a job with it over the past decade anyway. Better than Back to Earth, yes, but I think the fact that Dave is kind of putting RD forward as its tentpole for original content (and why not, since Back To Earth was a massive rating success, even if it was [censored]) means it's effectively getting the same focus there as shows like Doctor Who and Top Gear get on the BBC.
The fact the production values on this series have been so high is remarkable in and of itself - UKTV is not an exceptionally rich company and has never previously budgeted that much for original programming (the majority of which involves talking heads and stock footage anyway). It might be relatively similar to the shoestring Dwarf has always operated on, but that's a hell of an achievement for that network to begin with.
Ultimately, so far, I haven't talked with anyone who's been a fan of Red Dwarf previously and not found this series to be pretty good overall so far. People like Stu aren't going to be impressed because it's not their thing either way.

I'd hardly say it's the peak of BBC comedy either, or the last good sitcom.

Boosh is the very definition of "lol well random".
At least out of the ones you listed, only three are "cringe comedy" which is the worst trend in comedy ever because it's not comedy. And Peep Show's still good with it (thanks in large part to Mitchell who, basically, is so much funnier than Robert Webb it's embarassing).
