Talk about overkill! Using a ocean to ground missle of like 13 badmen.
And the next episode, I'd expect the yanks to keep mobile, sentient weapons as entertainment.

And the next episode, I'd expect the yanks to keep mobile, sentient weapons as entertainment. ;D Well that was a bit alright wasn't it? There's something magnificently perverse in having an episode of a British institution where 10 Downing Street gets razed. Shame that secretary bloke died, I liked 'im. Anyway. I would type loads of stuff about this episode, but now I'm all excited about next week instead. Daleks and Salt Lake City make for a combination of deliciousness.

45 seconds -- genius!
"Ring, damn you!" -- doubly genius!
Family drama -- excellent!
Mickey the superhero -- wonderful!
Ominous ending -- superb!
Preview -- utterly splendid!
And as Samface says, blowing up Downing Street is just amazing and really sets Doctor Who apart from a lot of American dramas (can you imagine the White House getting blown up in an American show? Don't think even '24' would go that far.)

Well, definitly not post 9/11, what with americans inability to distinguish between tv and reality And you're forgetting them blowing up the whitehouse in independance day pre 9/11... although mind you that is a filmso dosen't really count in this instance

Ah, yes, ID4. Good catch. Probably a few others, I suppose. Okay, but are there any where the good guys blow up the White House to save the day?

but then again im suprised that they did allow the image of number 10 being destroyed because apparently the film 28days later had lots of problems with both the filming outside of number 10 and with the newspaper headline "Blair declaires martial law" and the subtitle. "Armed forces told to shoot on sight"
but I just watched the episode and and I had to reqind the tape and watched the trailer at least 4 times! looks amazing.
loved these lines...
"They have weapons of mass destruction that they can deploy in 45 seconds"
"What are you doing!" "Im Hacking into the royal navy"
"OWWWW ho ho ho! The phone really is red!"
"Micky the idiot. the world is in your hands"

Ah see, that's where everyone makes the classic mistake - aliens plan to destroy the white house? no! They were actually going to beam down the cure for cancer into the oval office when - whoops, wouldn't you know it, some nubbin's left the death ray on - tsk... The morral of the story kids is to make sure you always put the saftey on your death ray when you arn't using it ^_^ btw - don't know how many of you regularly check up on the doctor who website at the bbc, but they've got a cracking site - if you look hard enough you can even find clives website "who is doctor who?" and the unit website (complete with the actual passwords used in the episode!) Gotta love the details ^_^

Owww the BBC is really hyping this next one up. the new advert is very cool if you havent seen the trailer for the next one, also ITV are seriously going to have to pull someone out of the hat if they hope to win next sats tv ratings.
The advert starts like this...
"the dr enters a darkened room,
close up of his face. cuts to a blue light.
DR: Im the Dr, Im here to help.
cut to the blue light two white lights flash.
Creature: DOCTOR!?
cut to dr, looking horrified...
cut back to lights
Dalek: DOCTOR! THE DOCTOR!!!
Lights come on to revieal a dalek aiming its weapon at him covered in chains.
ends... with voice over... "Dr who... next saturday"
Its easilly going to attract people who didnt see tongihts episode.

The problem with films like Independence Day is that they're unfortunate enough to suffer Roland Emmerich as their director, and he's one of those people Who Want To Make A Very Important Point. Like in The Day After Tomorrow, which was little more than a piece of ranting propoganda dressed up in some fancy CGI, Independence Day was when Emmerich had taken a dislike to tourists - to paraphrase a reviewer in SFX, it was if the aliens had been drawing up a hit-list of all of the world's major attractions for months beforehand. Anyway, I know that this is substantially out of date now, but I managed to get a review of Aliens of London posted up on Gallifrey One - you can read it on this page (third from the top).

Liked this episode, especially the ending and all the fabulous drama at the end. I'm still not keen on the Slitheen as villians though...I hope its the last we see of them.

I must admit, it never occurred to me that 'Independence Day' had any great point to it. I thought the plot was something like: "Bang. Boom. Panic. Panic. Bang. Booooom."

I don't get how a machine with a plunger for one and a whisker for another can be so scary to people and be so dangerous.

EXTERMINATE! ;D I don't get how a machine with a plunger for one and a whisker for another can be so scary to people and be so dangerous. They freak me out and I can tell you why. They have no faces and no emotion. Something as monoistic as them is TERRIFYING as you know there is not reasoning, no bargining, they will kill you on sight and thats all that matters. Also the voice they have, there is no hint of personality, they live to kill and they will kill. Not to mention they are near freaking indestructable. The still remain the scariest enemies ever in my opinion. Unstoppable by standards, monoistic in your death and that freaky freaky voice. *death rayed*

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only non-American person in the world who loved Independance Day. It's a modern-day B-movie done right. To criticise such a film for its realism and common sense is missing the point, IMO. Sometimes analysing a film isn't all about desperately scrabbling for metaphors and paradigms, but just looking at it at face value and translating it that way. I'm not saying there isn't a deeper purpose to ID4 (as a matter of fact, the tourism theory is a very good one), I just think its wrong that people can't enjoy such a movie without it having some underlining deep meaning. Genre films like this are, indeed just 'bang, boom, panic..' that's the nature of the thing. It's the drama that occurs because of it that I find interesting.
