Played a bit of it. I kinda like it but I wouldn't reccomend it for anyone who's looking for something similar to the main game...

Yeah, I remain unconvinced about whether Mercenaries is not just a cheeky rip-off but Revelations looks like some good stuff.
*watches video*
Heavens, Jill, that's a wiggly butt you've got going on there.

For those who missed it, there's a new 360/PS3/PC game on the way. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.It seems to basically be the Resi answer to Left 4 Dead. Set during the Raccoon City outbreak. Again. Hilariously, there's an interview vid currently on Live where one of the developers (it's not made by Capcom) claims that they came up with the idea all on their lonesome and Capcom gave it the thumbs up. Come on, this concept has "lazily cobbled together by execs just before lunch" all over it.

Can't say I'm really excited, to be honest, especially considering the track record of the developers.
Ehn, I'm pretty indifferent about Resident Evil games these days; to my mind there hasn't been a good one since Code: Veronica.
RE4 was a good game, but it's not an RE game; I wouldn't call it that.
RE5 was just garbage.

As someone who is absolutely adament that RE4 and 5 don't count and is obsessed with sticking to the formula, it's surprising that you wouldn't have like REmake. That was the high point of the atmospheric, scary and survival orientated Resident Evil.

I feel like a complete idiot now.

I quite liked RE5, but I can see where the hate's coming from. It's strayed pretty far from the franchise's original formula, with no zombies, a daylight setting and no truly scary scenes. If Capcom simply combined the best elements of the old (dark settings, appropriate music and sounds, surprise monsters) and new (over-the-shoulder camera, quick-action scenes, maybe the treasure collecting) then they'd have it spot on. Revelations looks like it might just pull that off, but it's still too early to tell if that's the case.

I quite liked RE5, but I can see where the hate's coming from. It's strayed pretty far from the franchise's original formula, with no zombies, a daylight setting and no truly scary scenes. All of these criticisms could arguably be applied to 4 (except daylight, which is only present really for the first half of the Village section), so I wouldn't say that's what ruined 5.
While 4's radical changes were understandably fanbase splitting, there was still a lot that elevated it right above 5.
First of all, there's a stripping of pretty much any remaining elements of variety besides run in and shoot. Even its set-pieces were lacklustre in this way- most of them lifted from 4 and being worse.
Example being when you're fighting the familiar face of El Gigante. With mounted machine guns on a truck, where literally all you do is shoot. Compared to Leon's fight with it, where he was on foot and had to jump on his back and knife the Hell out of it. It's obviously much lamer in 5.
Also, no puzzles, weakest soundtrack in the series and a bizarre choice to have an extremely heavy focus on multiplayer- simultaneously ruining its single-player- isolating its entire fanbase as it was always a single-player series. And I liked the co-op, I really did, but I was a uni student living with a couple of other guys with a heavy interest in video games. I was lucky enough to actually have someone to play it with properly, rather than having to try my luck online with utter morons. Not everyone has that option open to them, meaning they had a very watered down experience.
RE5's main problem lies in its development time. The Call of Duty series has received criticism for essentially releasing yearly updates to its games, rather than coming out with a game different enough to justify it being a full sequel. At least Call of Duty gets its act together and can actually develop a game in a year.
RE5, however, being backwards like pretty much all Japanese developers are these days, took about a million years to hit the shelves, with barely any improvements or changes made to RE4's formula. RE4 revolutionised 3rd person shooters and showed what last generations consoles were capable of in pretty much every respect, including its stunning graphics and wonderful, solid gameplay. Even its story was at least kind of interesting and made you want to see it through.
RE5 decided it would have better graphics and a couple more control options. That's it. It's like one of those Japanese sex robots that looks really realistic but has no personality because it's a robot.
In 2004, RE4 told everything on the GameCube to [censored] off and became the best game on the platform and then got too big for its boots and did the exact same thing on the PS2. Wonderful, groundbreaking experience.
Then, of course, games influenced by it spread their wings and regardless of what your personal opinions of them may be, games like Dead Space and Gears of War did their own thing with what RE4 laid the foundations of and made different games that at least improved on some aspects (walking while shooting, smoother controls, more combat options etc.).
RE5 came along however, not realising that what was groundbreaking in 2004 was outdated in 2009, and didn't improve or innovate whatsover.
So yeah, [censored] Resident Evil 5.

RE5 was a massive letdown. It's amazing how it just managed to kill my enthusiasm outright.
Had a larf with a friend on Co-Op, though.

My biggest question now is how the story will continue. Since they've now killed off Wesker, who's going to carry on the RE legacy of mysterious corporate/governmental conspiracy and globe-[censored]tering bio-terrorism?

I don't see why the story should continue, really. Maybe one more game mopping up loose ends and that's it. I wish more game series would have the balls to, y'know, actually finish.

You have a point, Mr. Face, I suppose Wesker's demise would be the best place to put the series to rest. There aren't a whole lot of loose ends to tie up, not really. I suppose there could be a bit more investigation into the events triggered by Umbrella's downfall.

The only reason I would want a Resident Evil 6 is because 5 was a terrible note to leave the series on. Resident Evil needs one decent last stand, to the standard of the 4th game, to leave the world with before it dies.

Mitch for President of Being Correct (well, actually I enjoyed 5, but it was probably the weakest of the main series and certainly not a high point to leave the series on).
Maybe a theoretical 6 could have one or more of the other Wesker experiments causing hijinks?

Maybe a theoretical 6 could have one or more of the other Wesker experiments causing hijinks? I have to agree with you on Resi 5 - I'd say it was the weakest in the main series too. You know, I read an article in an old issue of Official Playstation Magazine UK that featured a brief conversation with the producer for Resi 5, who suggested that the sixth game could be a reboot. This issue came out shortly after the game, however, so I don't know if this is something they intend to pursue. I do hope that with a sixth one they return more to their roots with the series: I feel that the survival horror elements that made up the original games have been pretty much stripped bare now.

'Reboot' might not be the best term for it, I would think 'transition' sounds more appropriate. 5 marks the end of a particular story arc, whereas 6 - should it happen - is the beginning of a new story arc.
