oh, com'on! not only these! almost all of the eternity ring saga stories were truly bizzare! forgot about the mad puppet story, or the future mobius one? what about Hercules? but probably the worst was the "human Sonic story" along with Bravehog

Tekno's bludgeoning murder of Set and the subsequent desperate retcon attempt.
Come at me, bro.

From Mike's pitch for this story in an email dated 30 December 2007: "They get to the mouth of a cave and Shorty finally gets up the courage to ask what happened. Then a voice comes from within. It's Set! And the Eternity Ring! With answers! Just like buses, everything comes along all at once!"
I'd like to think this puts an end to the "desperate retcon" suggestion of reactionaryism, but I suppose that would be delusional of me...

Alright, fair enough - I'll revise my post.

What was so bad about Bravehog? For me, it contradicts Sonic's origin, telling us that hedgehogs have always been blue. Plus, it was lazy attempted to parody a popular movie at the time.

But he wasn't blue, he was purple.

As I kid I remember smiling at the name of the villain in Bravehog: "King Leer".
I think people wouldn't hate the story so much if they just took it as Sonic making stuff up, rather than actual history. I mean, it's not good, but it's not the worst one-shot story the comic ever had.

That's the thing, if Sonic's lying to make someone feel better (someone with an insane guilt complex at that) then it's not so bad. The story just gives no indication that may be the case.
And, yeah, as was said, it was contemporary popular culture for the sake of it.

Why can't Sonic have a purple ancestor?

it could be possible if he was born blue. But in the STCO universe he bacame of that colour just as Amy that actually became pink. Here animals have "mostly" their natual colour

So how come Knuckles is red? Why is Big purple? Why is Vector that unnatural shade of green?

The point is, Sonic was established to have been born brown, none of these other characters come into it. Suddenly, it's shown that his ancestors, for no reason, are blue/purple as well? That's where the dislike comes from. Well, that and it was a pretty guff story.

So how come Knuckles is red? Because nobody knew what the [censored] an echidna was anyway. Seriously, nothing about Knuckles' design makes a lick of sense. With Sonic you can kind of interpret how they've stylised a hedgehog. Knuckles? Nothin'. Oh, that's glandular.

Why can't Sonic have a purple ancestor? Well, okay, let's have a look at it another why- why are his ancestors' quills streamlined? There's nothing to say they didn't have a giant hamster wheel used to measure speed and all broke the sound barrier while using it, but let's assume that's fairly unlikely. I will admit, though, Bravehog gets too much stick as "OMG THE WORST STORY EVERRRRRRRRRRR" when it's just not. It isn't, however, good, and the aesthetics don't help it. A better artist could have drawn things differently, but then that's just speculation.

I thought the consensus was that "The Trickster" is the worst STC story ever.

Guys, guys, we've already talked about what the worst STC stuff was ages ago. I was asking about the weirdest stuff.
Ehn, guess I'll just have to read through all the issues and pick out what I thought was weird myself.

Anyone remember the one where there was an evil Sonic which was spawned from an extra life? That was kind of odd at the time

He isn't, he's a murky shade of green. Ah, I see, he's green on every page but the last. My mistake! Well, the colourist's mistake, actually. Why is he green, then? Actually, I'm changing my vote. The weirdest STC moment was when that story wasn't shot down at conception. If we can't nominate editorial decisions, I pick that story in general. Though it wasn't weird in the traditional sense, more in a creeping, ominous way. it's all in good fun so don't take it seriously

It was. Repeatedly. I had to write the whole thing before it was accepted.
Nigel Kitching told me he liked it. That counts for me more than anything you can say.

It was. Repeatedly. I had to write the whole thing before it was accepted. So does just about every other story on the comic. You can get a pitch shot down, but nothing is ever greenlit unless you've a working script. So Stu's opinion is worth what fraction of a Kitching opinion? If it's half, I'll provide the other half and say it's a bad story. That at lea counterbalances Kitching, and I'm sure there are others who disagree with Kitching's opinion on that one too. Just because a story gets greenlit doesn't mean it's a good story. Lets not forget that there was an editor who agreed to publish the Twilight series. Plus, I wonder, what other choices were there for a story for the 15 th anniversary issue?
