Fair play, Pitt, I am referring to the American comics when I say "Western". Should probably have noticed that. Re-reading that post, it comes across as really snippy. I didn't mean it that way and I'm sorry if I came across as rude. Does the medium have a dominant genre in Japan? In America, the shonen series are most popular, Naruto and One Piece and so on, but I've heard that slice-of-life stuff is bigger in Japan.

seriously, besides Scott Pilgrim I cannot name one non-superhero American comic that's come out in the last two years. Well, IDW and Darkhorse have a fairly full stable of non-superhero licensed comics (some of which are pretty good, too - I've quite enjoyed the current on-going movie-tie-in Star Trek series, for example). But, outside of that, I've heard a lot of good things about Fables and Warren Ellis does a tonne of non-superhero stuff like Transmetropolitan. And even within the superhero 'genre', there's stuff like Powers that flips it on its head. I'd give more examples, but I don't actually own all that many outside of the superhero stuff myself. I'm really unashamedly only truly interested in the medium for the superheroes, and of course, so are many others. I don't think it's choking the ability to create non-super hero comics in the west, though, but if any of these comics were to make the leap to being 100% digital, it'd be stuff like Fables and Powers.

Re-reading that post, it comes across as really snippy. I didn't mean it that way and I'm sorry if I came across as rude. Not at all, I didn't think it was snippy at all. You're absolutely right. And actually, that's a good point, Alex. I've never really been that much into superheroes myself, and I guess they wouldn't benefit much from going digital. As I say, from everyone I've asked about it, apparently comics are dwindling, but maybe not to the "death" extent. I would argue that the superhero genre does have something of a strangle-hold on the comics medium, and it's probably due to my disinterest that I wouldn't mind seeing it become digital, if only loosen that chokehold a little. Ideally, both physical and digital copies of materials would be present.

So I finally managed to end the original run of the Blue Beetle by finding a trade paperback in a shop. What an amazing comic. Consistently interesting, funny, self-aware, fast-paced, and well thought-through.
Also tried giving the Teen Titans another go with another collection (to supplement the one I bought a couple of weeks ago which was pants). It was much better, but still far less interesting than I'd like it to be; I think I want to like this comic more than I actually do.

Anyone reading the current Ninja Turtles comic? I'm really enjoying it, I just need to pick up the micro-series collection and the Cthulhu mythos crossover. Bit annoyed at all the set-up and some of the mystic stuff, though.

Just re-read Terminator Robocop Kill Human. Just to make sure that what I read before wasn't a coked up hallucination. It wasn't.

I'm reading Avengers Vs X-Men, the TPB of which just arrived.
Obviously it's great fun. I don't read anything that isn't. That's why I read Marvel and not DC.

I got the hardback of The Joker: Death Of The Family a couple of weeks ago. As usual, I read aloud in all the different character voices. After doing the Joker's screeching laugh so many times, my throat feels shredded.

I don't buy any comics regularly anymore but of the ones I see sporadically, The Shadow: Year One is the standout new series. Judge Dredd Megazine has been good lately too. I tried Coffin Hill but I wasn't really into it.
Currently running through Hellblazer from issue one. Different to what I expected!

Got the Joker: Death of the Family. Quite like it, ending was a bit damp though.
And Gal Gadot is going to be Wonder Woman. She looks nice, good luck to her.
