I think Ed didn't want people spamming with overuse of the question mark.
As for the confused smiley thing, three question marks in a row will produce that smiley but since the swear filter changed three marks to jsut one then you can't get that smiley without sticking in 9 question marks! Tis maddness

There appears to be something off about the filter. I've seen [censored]ed and [censored]hole not censored but the words themselves are.
